Dimethylzinc has been used for a long time to introduce methyl groups into organic molecules or
to synthesize organometallic compounds containing methyl groups. In most laboratory synthesis,
it's preferred to use grignard reagents (organo-magnesium compounds) because they are easier
to handle and less flammable; however there are differences in reactivity and specificity between
the Grignard reagents and the organ-zinc compounds, for which the latter are preferred in some syntheses ; Dimethylzinc has a high vapor pressure and is therefore widely used in metallorganic vapor deposition (MOCVD = metalorganic chemical vapor deposition) to prepare semiconductor
films with wide band gap (eg ZnO, ZnS, ZnSe, ZnTe), and as p-dopant of III-V semiconductors
(eg GaAs, InP, AlxGa1-xAs).
These materials have applications in the fields of electronics and photonics .
Is a stable compound at room temperature, but is pyrophoric, ie it ignites spontaneously in air, forming ZnO ; the compound must always be handled in an inert atmosphere , since it reacts
violently in the presence of oxygen or moisture .
